i went to see the movie saturday night. it was a nice movie, but i think i like "how to train your dragon" more. afterwards, went to a soy milk place (called lai-lai) down the street that's open 24 hours. best soy milk and rice peanut milk and other breakfast fare i've had in taiwan so far. their oil stick is scrumptious, and their beef wrap is out of this world. too bad i dont have pics :(
but i've told my grandparents about it, and i'll be taking them there. so stay tuned for pics!

weekend down south
i visited tainan over the weekend. naively, i thought that my friend would take me to the best street food in tainan (which is what the city is known for). my friend's parents had other ideas, and instead took us to three amazing meals. the first was at their restaurant, which serves a taiwanese fish (don't know how to translate the name) in a bunch of different ways. the second was in the mountains, in which the taiwanese (free range) chicken is served in a bunch of different ways. the third was a seafood banquet at the harbor in kaohsiung (1.5hrs away)!
when not gorging myself, i visited the historic dutch fort. did you know that most taiwanese probably have some dutch blood in them? of course, it's not all that obvious after 15-20 generations. next to the fort is an old house in which the trees have taken form in and around it. the tree has tentacles that come out of its branches downwards, and can grow to become new trunks that stabilize the branch as it grows. very vinelike.
